Embodying a unique blend of melancholia and sensuality, UNDERHER’s latest releases include ‘Stranded’, ‘Melancholia’ and ‘Unbreakable’. The brainchild of Canada-based Khaled Bess, UNDERHER kickstarted his solo journey in May 2019.
‘Stranded’ features a pulsating mix of clicks and stomps accompanied by a minimalistic chord progression. This build-up of tension is slowly, eventually resolved by HRRSN’s almost pained vocals. In the latter half of the track, UNDERHER’s layering on sparse synths and melodies come together to transform this single into a more full-bodied piece.
By contrast, ‘Melancholia’ feels grittier with an emphasis on the enchanting vocals of Eleonora, whose voice is haunting and ever-present throughout the track. Undulating synths provide a real unease, which hammers home the sinking feeling of the lyrics ‘I’m drowning in my pure melancholia’.
UNDERHER’s most recent release ‘Unbreakable’ encapsulates a sense of foreboding and woe in its instrumentation, offset by the impassioned and uplifting tones of Kyla Millette’s vocals. Permeating the track, purposefully discordant synths are splattered across its three and a half minutes.
Hinting at some new EP’s, an LP and a worldwide tour, 2020 is sure to be a busy year for UNDERHER.
