PREMIERE: Astrological alt-rock queens, Venus, breathe life to the lockdown with ‘Sour’ remix

Based in Leeds, Venus consists of Grace ‘GK’ Kelly (Lead Vocals), Jess Ayres (Lead Guitar), Hannah Barraclough (Bass), Grace Stubbings (Synth) and Gabby Cooke (Drums).

At seven and a half minutes, the band’s new remix of ‘Sour’ features powerful, striking, filtered vocals from GK, varying electric drum rhythms and textures, energetic guitar lines and gorgeous synth melodies. Building on the bridge and breakdown sections, Venus inject a raucous mix of heavy electronic guitar and synths. It feels fresh and new, whilst teasing brief nostalgic moments of 80s synth sounds.

In a statement, GK described ‘Sour’ as “the aggravation derived from shallow characters pre-conceptually generalising or judging you, and mistakenly thinking they’ve ‘figured you out’. If you’re someone who has been alienated, demonised or simply bullied for being who you are, I hope this song gives you some comfort. But a big thank you, to the perpetrators who inspired us to write this song. I hope you listen to it.”

Another creation worthy of exploration during this lockdown is Venus’ recent EP launch. Following three powerhouse singles in 2019, Venus released a three-track EP, ‘Wicked Things’, on April 3rd 2020. Exploring themes of mental health, liberation and integrity, the EP encompasses punk fuelled ‘No Signs’, empathic lullaby, ‘Amy’, and the audacious and daring ‘You’re Alright, I Guess’.

If you’d like to find out more about Venus you can follow them via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Their ‘Sour Lockdown Remix’ is now available through Bandcamp and on Monomyth Records’ Lockdown Play Wall.
